Thanksgiving is one week away and as sugar plum fairies aren't quite dancing in my head yet some inspirational words about books, art, and libraries from Steve Martin and Patti Smith!!!
“Someone said to me, these libraries aren’t important anymore, because you can get it all online,” he said, gazing at the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. “But you can’t. If you Google an artist and Google the images, you get no information — you don’t get where the painting is, you don’t get the medium, you don’t get the sizes, you don’t get the provenance. So these libraries are really important.” Steve Martin

And from Patti Smith:
"There is nothing more beautiful than the book, the paper, the font, the cloth," she said at the New York event.

As the leaves begin to change and the air develops a nip there is nothing more fun than sitting down in the afternoon with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate...so here are my offerings for your viewing pleasure of a "good book"...
Check out the wonderful and magical books that are in the exhibit at 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, Oregon called "Pop-Up".  Some of my favorites in the exhibit include Paul Johnson, a phenomenal book artist from the UK, Emily Martin and many more.  To view these fun pop-up, paper-engineered specialties go to www.23sandygallery.com and click on the online exhibit.  A full-color catalog is also available.
For those photo buffs out there out snapping the beauties of nature, check out the artist's books that are also photobooks at www.abecedariangallery.com.  The Abecedarian Gallery specializes in exhibits of the book arts and broadsides but also showcases the work of wonderful Denver artists  This exhibit has some little gems that are just marvelous and will inspire all of us to get out there and take a few snaps and turn them into books!!
As the weeks fly by, JUSTARIP Footnotes will also list exhibits that catch its interest in New York City and Philadelphia...so, grab that cup of java, pull up to your laptop and catch some great art!!  Keep creating!!
