And, while in the big apple during this festive time of year when New York City and New Yorkers show off their holiday finery, take in a show. One of the Broadway shows we caught was "Time Stands Still" at the Cort Theater featuring Laura Linney, Eric Bogosian and Cristina Ricci...and tickets can be had for $35.00 or less!!! So, have a great week and a great holiday...and hope everyone caught the lunar eclipse...if not, we can be sure to be a little "looney" around the holiday season!!!
On the 8th day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...not looney tunes but a great video by performance artist, Ennio Marchetto who bills himself as the Living Paper Cartoon... and talk about pop-ups coming off the wall, check out his video on his website at www.enniomarchetto.com. Another great holiday weekend in New York City presented a fabulous exhibit at the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery of Bettye Saar's new work entitled "Cage". Visit the virtual online gallery tour to see views from the exhibit at: http://www.michaelrosenfeldart.com/exhibitions/exhibition.php?m=ip&i=10g

And, one can dream...Some other great releases coming out in 2011 is a new book on the book arts by Alisa Golden...and check out www.abecedariangallery.com for their great juried exhibit entitled "Artist's Book Cornucopia" as well as other exhibits on their 2011 exhibit schedule...so, lots to do, lots to dream about...besides sugar plum fairies and all that other fluff stuff!! Enjoy the holidays!
As the holiday season continues with to-do lists, more to-do lists, and really have to-do lists, it may be time to step back, take some old books and spend quality time with family making some recycled gifts like altered books! There are great instructions and samples on the web to help you out, but here's some weblinks to get you inspired!
Doug Beube 's work uses old telephone books and gives them a new twist! www.donnaseagergallery.com/art_of_the_book/.../Doug_Beube/; Brian Dettmer treats books as sculptural books...check his work out at www.briandettmer.com; Another great altered book artist whose work is great for inspiration is Sas Colby who does workshops throughout the country...www.sascolby.com. Last but not least there is a whole world of books about altered books out there that can be perused and ogled over at online sites such as Borders, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon.com. There is no end to the recycling of old books and their many uses. One of the newest releases is "Playing with Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the Book..." by Jason Thompson. Great ideas with a great gallery of works by altered book artists. So gather your old hardbacks, softbacks and start folding, cutting and warping!!! Enjoy the holidays and think green and recycle...or is that upcycle??? |
